OXFORD MUSIC THEATRE
‘King & Country’
The music drama tells the story of the tragic involvement of one family and their community in the war. It is passed on a powerful 1923 play by Allan Monkhouse -‘The Conquering Hero’. Three scenes are written in such a way that they would work with a large community chorus.
The piece is not celebratory or partisan; whilst it presents the actuality of war, its tone is summed up in the final number ‘Only War will win’.
It uses authentic historical material, and for the production in Brighton it drew on documentation and research of the Royal Sussex Regiment, using actual letters from these soldiers which were written from the trenches. However, any future production could use appropriate local examples.
‘King & Country’ also features WW1 poems set as songs including those by Roland Leighton and Edward Thomas.
